Origins of the Pomeranian

The Pomeranian originated in Germany and acquired its name from the area of Pomerania. The sizes of original Pomeranian breed were significantly larger than they are today, as the breed has been developed from the ancient spitz breed. In 1888, Queen Victoria began to breed Pomeranians as show dogs, It was herself who essentially started breeding them down in size, making the breed become considerably popular throughout England. The Pomeranian was commonly used as a watchdog and was also know for performing tricks.

The Pomeranian is a small dog and part of the toy breed group. Adult Pomeranians typically weigh between 1.4kg to 3kg. The height could vary from 22cm to 28cm. Both male and female Pomeranians grow the same in sizes.

The Pomeranian has very long double coats, which should be brushed frequently. The bottom coat is very much like cotton and is only shed once or twice a year. The top coat, however will shed constantly throughout the year.

The Pomeranian can come in a wide selection of colours, such as: White, Orange, Orange Sable, Wolf Sable, Black, Chocolate, Beaver, Blue and Merles (Dark patches on a light fur).

The Pomeranian has great temperaments, a great family dog who gets on with children and other pets. He is a very lively little dog, intelligent, eager to learn and very loyal to his owner. Therefore if you are after an easy to train dog, this breed is ideal. Despite the sizes of the breed, the Pomeranian classes himself as a big dog and is very outgoing. One thing to watch out for with this little ball of fluff is, they love the sound of their own voice and can become very noisy unless they have a sensible owner and trainer.

Exercising Your Pomeranian

Although the Pomeranian is a small dog, he enjoys his walks just as much as a big dog does. Despite its size, a healthy adult Pomeranian is able to in fact walk for miles. He doesn’t necessarily need to be walked as he can burn off all of his energy by running around the garden. However it is advisable to walk him daily to let him explore and turn to his inquisitive side, this will help prevent any behaviour problems, which could potentially occur.
