Origin of the Dalmatian

Dalmatians are famous for their spots, which originally originated from Africa, Asia and Europe. The origin of the Dalmatian was a mystery right up until 1993, when the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), which is the international federation of the Kennel Club recognised that the Dalmatian had Croatian routes. During the middle ages, the Dalmatian was used as a hound, but in the 1800’s it became popular to have a Dalmatian trot beside a horse and carriage. They were then used as companions and would guard the carriage whilst their master was away. Since then, the Dalmatian breed has been used in a variety of roles, including: circus performer, hunter, mascot and bird dog.

Sizes of Typical Male and Female Dalmatian

Dalmatians are large, muscular dogs, but there is not much difference in height between male and female dogs. Males typically are around 50-60cm (22-24 inches) tall, whilst females are slightly shorter at 50-55cm (20-22 inches). Both sexes weigh approximately 25 kg (55 pounds).

Dalmatian Temperament

Dalmatians are very loyal, friendly, playful dogs. They are also highly intelligent and love been active, so regular play and walks are a must for this breed. Dalmatians get along well with children and other animals, especially horses (from their original routes). If you are out of the house a lot during the day, a Dalmatian may not be the breed for you, as they thrive from companionship and need plenty of leadership from their owners. If Dalmatians are left alone too long, they can become bored and destructive. Given the right training, the Dalmatian can become a great family pet.

Dalmatian Coats

The Dalmatian coat is short, fine and smooth. Although they are a short-haired dog, Dalmatians do shed all year round, but only heavily twice a year. As there hairs are fine, they can become imbedded in fabrics such as sofas and clothing, so weekly grooming with a hand mitt or brush should be sufficient. As their coat has less oil in it, Dalmatians don’t have a ‘dog smell’ that most other breeds have, and often stay cleaner for longer. Dalmatians need only minimal baths.

Exercise Your Dalmatian

Dalmatians have a lot of energy, so they do require a long daily walk. Also the dog should be allowed off the leash in a safe, enclosed area so they can release some built-up energy. They also require mental stimulation as they are an intelligent breed. If Dalmatians are not mentally challenged they may become restless and will find their own entertainment with your possessions.

What Health Problems can Dalmatians Suffer From

Dalmatians are prone to deafness, with approximately 10-12 per cent of puppies born deaf. Around 70 per cent of Dalmatians are prone to some sort of deafness in their lifetime. As well as deafness, Dalmatians aged over 10 years can be susceptible to hyperuricemia, which is when the liver has difficulty breaking down uric acid. If left untreated, the acid can build up and cause bladder and kidney stones.

The Life expectancy of a Dalmatian

Dalmatians usually live on average between 11 and 13 years, although some dogs can live up to 16 years.

Dalmatian Puppies

Dalmatians typically have large litters, with puppies born solid white in colour. Their spots don’t usually start appearing until they are at least a week old. When the puppies are four weeks old, they usually have the majority of their spots, but they do continue to slowly cultivate throughout the lifetime of the dog.
When the puppy is around six weeks old they should be tested for deafness. If the Dalmatian puppy is totally deaf, they should be neutered or spayed.
