Origin of the Siberian Husky

As you can tell from their name, Siberian Huskies originated in Siberia. They were used to pull sledges, as guard dogs and also to herd reindeers. Siberian Huskies were first used as sled dogs by the Chukchi people, approximately 2000 years ago.

The dogs are happy to work throughout the day, but at night, they were welcomed in their owner’s dwellings to play with the children and snuggle up to at night for warmth. This work/play lifestyle continued for centuries which enabled the breed to keep a key attribute for hunting, but also to be unaggressive towards humans.

Nowadays Huskies are used for search and rescue in treacherous conditions, but also make great family pets due to their pack instinct.

Sizes of Typical Male and Female Siberian Huskies

Siberian Huskies are a medium sized breed. Males are typically around 53-60cm (21-23.5 inches) tall, whilst females are slightly shorter at 51-56cm (20-22 inches). Males weigh approximately 20-27 kg (45-60 pounds), whilst females weigh between 16-22 kg (35-50 pounds).

Siberian Husky Temperament

Siberian Huskies are happy, loving and gentle dogs. They are a social, docile and rather relaxed breed, which makes them good with children. Siberian Huskies are a very intelligent breed, but will only respond to training if the trainer is assertive and displays leadership. If this trait is not shown to a Siberian Husky, the dog will simply disobey you.

Although they are not prone to barking, Siberian Huskies do enjoy howling, which they will do when they get bored. If they do not get enough mental and physical exercise, they can become destructive around the house.

Siberian Husky Coats

A Siberian Husky coat is medium in length, but is very thick due to its double layer. They do require daily grooming, and do shed twice a year.

The breed can withstand temperatures as low as -60 degrees Celsius.

Exercise Your Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies need regular exercise due to their history of sledge pulling. A daily walk or jog will be sufficient, but they should not be walked in hot weather.

The dog can be left outside in a secure yard, but if you have a grass area you must ensure that the dog can not dig their way out, as they love a good dig.
