Origin of the Whippet

The elegant small greyhound was developed at the end of the 19th century by crossing greyhounds with Italian greyhounds and terriers. Its name originates from the expression “whip it”, meaning to move quickly. The Whippet is an exceptional track racer over short distances reaching speeds of nearly 60km per hour in seconds. Coursing this type of breed was an entertaining form of gambling for the lower classes in England and was nicknamed “the poor man’s racehorse”. Some of the Whippet’s talents include; sighting, hunting, racing, watchdog, agility and lure coursing. The Whippet’s sweet nature makes him a fine companion dog.

The height of a male Whippet is between 47 and 56 cm, while females’ measure between 44 and 54 cm.

Whippet Temperament

Whippet Coats

A Whippet’s coat should remain fairly weather resistant, given the texture and length.

Exercise your Whippet

What health problems can Whippets suffer from?
