Origin of the Affenpinscher
Affenpinschers are originally from Germany. They are commonly called monkey dogs, as their name comes from the German word for monkey or ape, Affe. Historically, the Affenpinscher was bred to be a ratting dog, keeping the population of rodents away from kitchens and stables.
Sizes of Typical Male and Female Affenpinschers
There does not tend to be a variation in the height and weight of male and female Affenpinschers. They tend to weigh between 2.9 and 6 kg, and stand between 23 and 30cm in height.
Affenpinscher Temperament
Affenpinschers are often mistaken as members of the Terrier group, due to their appearance and personality. They are loyal and demand attention, becoming bored if training and play routines are not challenging enough for them. Also, they can become very protective of family members and sometimes display territorial tendencies towards toys and food. As such, they are not recommended as pets for families with small children.
Affenpinscher Coats
Affenpinschers are regularly claimed to be a non-shedding breed, which is a common misconception – no breed is completely non-shedding, but some shed a lot less than others. Their coats are short and wiry, with slightly longer hair over the head and shoulders to form a mane-like look. They should be groomed relatively frequently, around once a week, to ensure loose hairs are removed and do not irritate the skin.
Exercise Your Affenpinscher
Affenpinschers are an ideal breed for those living in an apartment but they also like to experience the outdoors because, although they are very playful indoors, they love to explore wide areas and dig in the undergrowth. However, it is recommended that they are only walked in mild weather, and owners must be careful to ensure their pet is not too warm, as their thick coats make it easy for them to overheat.
What Health Problems can Affenpinschers Suffer From?
Due to their short noses, much like Pugs, Affenpinschers may suffer from respiratory problems. Slipped stifle and small fractures are also concerns to be checked for, due to their delicate bone structure. Overall, however, Affenpinschers are relatively healthy and suffer from very few genetic disorders.
The Life expectancy of an Affenpinscher
On average, Affenpinschers live between 10 and 12 years.
The cost of an Affenpinscher
Affenpinscher puppies can cost anywhere between £300 and £500, however this can increase depending on breeding lines. Puppies should always be seen with both parents and bought from a reputable breeder to minimize the risk of buying from a puppy farm.
Affenpinscher Puppies
Affenpinscher puppies can be difficult to housetrain, so a firm and determined attitude is a must when considering bringing one into your home. They are playful and affectionate, but can be stubborn so it is important to be consistent in training and vary techniques to keep them interested and alert. Litters usually contain between 2 and 3 puppies.
