Origin of the Border Collie
Border Collies were bred in the Anglo-Scottish border region to assist shepherds with sheep herding, with the first recognisable members of the breed appearing in the late 19th century. Today, the Border Collie is the most widespread of the collie breeds.
Sizes of Typical Male and Female Border Collies
Border Collies are classed as medium sized dogs. Adult males should weigh between 14kg and 20kg, while females should be lighter, between 12kg and 19kg. In height, males tend to be between 48cm and 56cm, with females slightly smaller at 46-53cm on average.
Border Collie Temperament
Border Collies are reputed to be one of the most intelligent breeds of dog and also one of the most energetic. As such, they require a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, or else they may develop neurotic behaviours out of boredom (examples being digging holes and chewing furniture). As they have been bred for generations as working dogs, the desire to herd is instinctive, and as such makes them unsuitable pets for homes with cats or small children, although they benefit from the company of other dogs, if properly socialised. Another legacy from their working heritage is extreme motion sensitivity, making them likely to chase moving vehicles.
Border Collie Coats
In general, Border Collies have a moderate amount of coat, which means not much hair will be shed. However, there are exceptions, and with longer haired dogs a reasonable amount of grooming is required. Their double coats vary from slick to lush.
Exercise Your Border Collie
Border Collies are extremely demanding in terms of exercise, requiring a minimum of two walks lasting at least one hour per day, and a lot of play to prevent negative behaviours from developing. This is one of the most popular breeds for disciplines such as flyball and agility, due to their energetic and intelligent natures.
What Health Problems can Border Collies Suffer From?
Hip dysplasia is relatively common in older dogs, so testing your Border Collie is recommended. Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA) and epilepsy are also considered common genetic diseases. As there is now a DNA test available to check for CEA, breeders can ensure they will not produce affected pups.
The Life expectancy of a Border Collie

The cost of a Border Collie
The average cost of a Border Collie puppy is between £300-500; however, high bred working dog puppies the cost may be considerably higher.
Border Collie Puppies
Anyone considering bringing a Border Collie puppy into their home should consider carefully whether they have sufficient time, energy and patience to devote to this energetic and demanding breed, as an alarming number of Border Collies end up in rescue centres every year. Puppies are boisterous and eager to play. Always buy your puppy from a reputable breeder.
